Second half penalty double from Elliott Sartorius sees Imps past the Iron
The first half was very evenly contested with both sides having opportunities but neither side could find a breakthrough before the break.
The Imps had the first chance of the game when a corner was whipped in, but nobody could find the finishing touch and United cleared their lines.
The Iron had an effort from 20 yards out but the shot was dragged wide of the target.
The Iron then rattled the upright, City responded and were close to finding the opening goal but failed to capitalise on the chance so at the break it was all square.
HT: Imps 0 - 0 Iron
As the second half got underway, the Iron had an effort cleared off the line, shortly after a curling effort was wide of the upright. The Imps were riding their luck and had their keeper to thank to keep the scores level, a free kick tipped onto the crossbar and out for a corner.
The Iron struck the woodwork again and were in the ascendancy but couldn't find a way through and it was the Imps who struck, the Iron's goalkeeper bringing down Adebayo-Smith inside the penalty area after the ball was played forward by Smith over the top between the defence and keeper, up stepped Sartorious who tucked away the penalty to open the scoring.
The Imps were then denied from doubling their lead, the keeper saving from a one v one situation.
With a couple of minutes remaining the Imps were awarded another penalty, this time Akinola being fouled in the area, up stepped Sartorious again and he once again found the back of the net to put the Imps two-up.
Scunthorpe still had time to hit the woodwork again before the referee ended the encounter.
